Brave

Disney-Pixar's "Brave" presents a medieval teenage princess twist on a mother-daughter relationship. Another engaging animated feature from the company that brought us "Toy Story," "Wall-E," "Up" and "Ratatouille."

Synopsis: Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late. --Disney

The Positive: Pixar lost its winning streak when the Oscar for Best Animated Feature went to "Rango" last year and the studio's "Cars 2" was not even nominated. This year, Pixar is definitely back in the game with "Brave."

Pixar's 13th full-length feature tackles a mother-daughter relationship with an unpredictable premise and a different take on a Disney princess. Merida may not be the most engaging Disney character but she definitely hits the mark.

Story-wise, "Brave" has both conventional and fresh elements with a strong message about what it would take to repair the consequences of what we say and do.

The mischievous triplets, Merida's little brothers, will make you laugh-out-loud.

The animation and voice-work are exceptional.

The special added attraction--"La Luna"--is wonderful!

The Negative: After watching the film, you'll discover that the title does not make sense. But that's just trivial. The weakness of the film lies in the story's lack of emotional punch.

Rude humor earned for "Brave" a PG rating in America. Good thing it's GP in the Philippines.
